The 5 Languages Of Love: Words of Affirmation

Depositphotos_52134585_xsWhen I was a teen a group of my friends were sitting around and one of them suggested that we each tell something that we like about each other. It was a heartwarming experience to hear the positive things my friends had to say about me. I also loved telling my friends what I liked about them. We all cherish that conversation.

When I was reading, The Five Love Languages of Children by Gary Chapman., there was a similar story on just how powerful this exercise can be. It also highlights how important it is to hear from others why they value having you in their life.

On page 52 in the book, the authors tell the following story:

“A middle-school teacher in Minnesota did a remarkable thing. She asked her students to list the names of all the other students in the class, leaving a space between names. Then she told them to think of the nicest thing they could say about each of their classmates and write it down. At the end of the period she collected these sheets and over the weekend, she wrote the name of each student on a separate sheet and listed what everyone had said about that person. On Monday, she gave each student his or her list.

As they began reading, they started whispering to each other, “I never knew that meant anything to anyone.” or,”I didn’t know others liked me so much.” The papers were never discussed in class, but the teacher knew the exercise was a success because it gave her students such a positive feeling about themselves.”

There is even more to the story, on what a tremendous impact in made on the children in that class, but I don’t want to give anymore away. You need to read the book yourself and join us for Book Club!
