Positive Discipline: What Every Parent Needs To Know

Our next Tele-Seminar is in 2 weeks! I am really excited for our newest class. The presenter is my Mary Nelsen Tamborski

The topic:
Positive Discipline Tools For Keeping The Joy In Parenting

Her presentation is about an important subject, how to help us keep the joy in parenting. Why is this important? Because sometimes life with kids can get hard. We get bogged down with all our day to day stresses and we forget how to enjoy our families.

To help us get to know Dr. Tamborski, I interviewed her. Here is what she has to say about parenting:
1.What is the best parenting advice you ever got?
Being raised by an expert in parenting Jane Nelsen–author and speaker on Positive Discipline–you would think that there may be a little pressure and even judgement about how my husband and I were patenting. That was not the case–since the day we brought our first son home, my mom has always encouraged me to follow my heart and to do what feels right. In other words, don’t do what the books say unless it feels right for you and your baby.

2. You run many workshops with parents, what do you think is the most important thing parents need to know about raising kids?
That our children are our biggest teachers and they’re going to provide us with several lessons about ourselves and life. I always believed I was an extremely patient person with a high tolerance and a calm and cool personality. It wasn’t until after I had three children that I was tested to believe otherwise.
I once heard Diane Sawyer say, “You need to have a test to have a testimony.” I believe that’s the case with raising children and being a parent. I think all of us want the same things for our children–it’s just a matter of learning the right skills and having the tools to get them there. That said– We teach in our Positive Discipline parenting workshops that the challenges you have with your children are actually opportunities to teach your children the life skills and characteristics you want them to have.

3.What is your basic parenting philosophy ?
To teach your children with kindness and respect. This means being respectful to them while also teaching them what it means to be respectful to us as parents and others. One of the most important philosophies of PD is to be both kind and firm at the same time. Often times parents are either to kind or too firm. PD provides over 52 different tools to parent with this style.

4. What do you love most about running your workshops?
Hearing parents share their stories that are all so similar and feeling the sense of connection amongst all of us.
Another moment I love is when the parents get to practice their tools and them come back to class and share their success stories. So rewarding! Finally–every time I teach these workshops I get to learn more and be a student too. These workshops make me a better mom!

Want to learn more? Come and join us on Monday December 10, 2012. You don’t want to miss this class.
