Handling defiant kids can be tricky. Once they get angry in can be hard to calm them down. It is helpful to know ways on how to help defiant kids from getting mad in the first place. In a previous post we spoke about the things that parents do that may contribute to defiant behavior in their children.

Our actions can provoke defiant behavior. Here are some things we should try to avoid and better ways to manage our interactions with our kids:

1. Making promises and then breaking them.
“I know I said we were going out to the playground today, but we can’t.”

So instead we can say:

“I know you are probably going to be upset about this. Our playground plans need to be cancelled. I am sorry.”

2. Giving them a task that is too difficult or pushing too hard when they are having a bad day.
“I know you are tired, but that is not an excuse for not doing your work!”

So instead we can say:

“You look like you are having a rough day. Do you think a drink or a break would help you get back on track?”

3. Direct Commands:
“You need to do all your homework now!”

So instead we can say:
“What would be a good time for you to do your homework?”

4. Picking at kids for little annoyances.

“You are such a mess. You are getting the mud on your shoes on the floor!”

So instead we can say:

“Muddy shoes belong in the laundry room.”

So there you have it. Handling defiant kids can be tough. If you want to learn more you can get our audios here:
