The Best Parenting Advice Ever: Jane Nelsen Of Positive Discipline

We had a great class last night. It was the second in our  Summer Master Parenting Class

I have always been impressed with Jane Nelsen’s http://www.positivediscipline.com/ theories on parenting.  Her books, audios and other material are filled with wisdom and practical advice.

We learned so much last night in our class:

“Why Children Don’t Listen and Tools That Encourage Respectful Cooperation”

Dr. Nelsen pointed out the following:

Kids will listen but they won’t obey. They don’t like direct commands. We need to find ways to help them listen. One great, tip was to ask them curiosity questions.

We learned why we need to use different Positive Discipline tools with different children. We discussed that children act in a certain way, because they might need attention, to feel powerful, to get even or because they feel inadequate. Once parents can figure out how what their child goal is, they can parent more effectively.

We gave examples of kind and firm ways to engage cooperation so that your kids will feel respected when you ask them to help out.

We learned that children deep down want to be helpful and the reasons why they aren’t helpful.

We discussed why family meetings are essential to the running of a smooth and happy home.

The best advice was given after this question was asked:

“What is the best way to truly change our own behavior as parents?   The recommended approaches are ones I believe in, yet when you are ‘in the moment’ and your kids are not listening, or are being wild or difficult, it’s hard to call up the recommended approaches vs. resorting to old techniques like yelling and punishing.”

I found Dr. Nelsen’s answer to this question to be the best parenting advice I have ever heard.

You can still join us and listen to the audios of the previous classes.
You don’t want to miss out on this great opportunity.
