I have one child who likes to poke fun at me about being a parent educator. When I lose it, he says, “Don’t worry Ma, I won’t tell the people in your parenting class what you just said.”
My husband also likes to tease me as well. There are some times, let’s just say, where I am not practicing what I preach. That is when he likes to say, ” I hope you enjoyed this week’s episode of Parenting 101. Stay tuned for next week’s exciting conclusion.”
Thank goodness I have a sense of humor and I try not to take myself so seriously.
I do have one child, who likes the fact that I teach parenting classes. The other day he said to me, “Ma, listen to this, it will be good for your parenting class.”
He was reading Reader’s Digest, “Laughter the Best Medicine II.” There was a page called quotable quotes for parents. He read what Ed Asner said, “Raising kids is part joy and part guerrilla warfare.”
He handed me the book and I read some of the others,
“A perfect parent is a person with excellent child-rearing theories and no actual children” Dave Barry
“There is no such thing as fun for the whole family” Jerry Seinfeld
“Without enough sleep we all become tall two-year olds.”
And this was my favorite,by Martin Mull, “Having a family is like having a bowling alley installed in your head.”
I thought that described parenting pretty accurately.
Although we both had a good laugh, I hated for my son to go away from our exchange thinking that parenting is all bad. So, I said, “You know this stuff is funny and partly true, but being a parent is kind of crazy but it is the best thing in the world. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
